On December 23, 2010 the chairman “Democratic Movement-United Georgia”, Nino Burjanadze met Patriarch of Russia Kiril II.The patriarch of Russia stated during the meeting that none of the Georgian or Russian politicians who harmed the relationship between the two nations, will not succeed. The relationship between Georgian and Russian nations will be restored and this relationship has a future.
During the meeting it was underlined that the unity of the Georgian Church is not under question.
During the meeting Nino Burjanadze brought the issue of Ilori Church in Abkhazia because during rehabilitation works authentity of XI century Georgian Church was damaged. The patriarch mentioned that he has got totally different information regarding the church. He will form the special group who will study renovation works done. In case if the information of Georgian side is true, Russian patriarch will condemn such actions and will do everything to give to the church original face.
Patriarch of Russia stated on this issue he will address the Georgian side as well.
On December 24, the leader of “Democratic Movement” Nino Burjanadze after returning from Moscow met the Patriarch of Georgia Ilia II and informed him about the details of her visit to Moscow.
The Patriarch of Georgia Ilia II expressed the gratitude for raising the issue of the Ilori St.George Church and welcomed the initiative of Russian patriarch.
On the issue Ilori Church “Democratic Movement” addressed the ministry of Culture to release the information on Ilori Church in order to make it possible for the Georgian and Russian churches to solve possible problems with Ilori rehabilitation.
Unfortunately the attitude of Georgian authorities is cynical and the issue is used only for political reasons.
